DOUBLED UP! On Our First Ever Elk Hunt - DIY Public Land Archery Bulls
Jeff and I drew our first ever elk tags in Wyoming. In a matter of months, we gather up all the gear we needed, learned as much as we could about elk behavior and hunting tactics, e-scouted all over WY public land, and practiced extensively with our calls and bows. All the preparation for our DIY backcountry public land archery hunt was worth it because we were able to bring home truck load of meat and 2 nice sets of antlers.

      I know it can happen, but I also know that just because you go near a den does not mean they "will" move their pups. There are a ton of different factors that would dictate whether or not the adults feel threatened enough to move. This example with trail camera footage proves that they don't do it every time.

    (Wife typing) Thank you for this video! Something caught my eye in the terracing of a farm field about half a mile away. We've had a fox terrorizing and picking off our poultry one by one over the years, but have never been able to locate his den. Until today! Without being there near it in person yet, it meets all the requirements you list here. Good to know what direction he/she is coming from. Thank you!

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors 3 місяці тому

      Thanks, I'm glad you could use the information. Some more good information that ive learn is that some fox den locations can remain active for years, and some can change rather frequently. I suspect it has something to do with territory. I've seen multiple times where a fox dens pops up close to an existing older den, then the very next year that new den is abandoned. I have also seen dens (like the older one I was talking about in this video) that were active for a few years, abandoned maybe a year or 2, then active again for a while which means different foxes moved and made it their home. It sounds like that may be the case for you as well. I have chickens and turkeys as and have had pretty good luck keeping them safe from foxes (raccoons and fishers have been a different story). Good luck with your poultry!

      You should look into a place called Colonial Willisburg in Virginia. They still make flintlock rifles they way they used to over 100 years ago. Here is a video that shows the process. (ua-cam.com/video/qTy3uQFsirk/v-deo.htmlsi=6n5VttfmATqYEvnN, I know it is long, but if you are interested you will really enjoy it). Don't quote me on this, but I remember hearing the man making the flintlocks in this video is the same guy still making flintlocks at Colonial Williamsburg to this day (I heard this a few years ago so may not be true anymore). I also remember hearing the flintlocks he makes now would be worth something around $40,000-50,000 (again that was quite a few years ago so probably much more now).

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors 6 місяців тому

      @@Seabass-a It depends how you are making the bow. For this case, with hickory the sap wood does well in tension and the heart wood does well in compression. So the best thing to do would have half heart wood and half sap wood with the heart wood as the belly and sap wood as the back. With other types of wood like Osage orange, you will do what's call "chasing a grain." Removing all the sap wood and exposing 1 continuous grain line of heart wood to be used as the back of the bow. This method works for many types of wood.

    • @NobleSavageOutdoors
      @NobleSavageOutdoors 6 місяців тому

      Obviously it would be best to get them fresh, degrease the skull, then whiten it. A dead head sitting around for a year will lose almost all the grease, but will stain and deteriorate as it is exposed to UV light and rain. I'm sure this has started to happen already to the one you found, but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing. I have whitened very stained dead heads before with this method and gotten them almost as good as fresh ones. If you can get a dead head white, normally they will stay the same color over time unlike a fresh one that might yellow if you didn't properly degreases it. Definitely give it a try!

    I understand that all predators want beaver and Muskrat and actively seek them out in the wild. What I was wondering is,does anyone use raccoon meat for bait since it is the most available to any trapper? My observation to date though is that nothing eats raccoon in nature other than flies laying eggs. At least until recently,my area has only had eagles and turkey vultures for a very short while, maybe 10 -12 years and I haven't actively paid attention to see if they are interested in raccoon scavenging? Likewise my area hasn't had owls for nearly 50 years so I don't know if they scavenge or hunted raccoon? We only just recently started getting Bobcats and it seems they hunt raccoon but I haven't yet encountered a bobcat in my area. Hopefully this season I will be able to harvest a cat.

      From my research and observations, I have come to the same conclusions. Raccoons are seldom scavenged by most of the desired trapping predators. I do believe possums will eat it, but what won't they eat? Turkey vultures will eat about anything as well, and I have seen eagles and hawks scavenge just about every animal carcass in my area. I agree it is a shame because raccoon meat is so available to every trapper, and I really want to use it instead of letting it go to waste. I even had ideas to mix it with other meats to potentially make it more desirable to predators. However, I have come to realization that a little meat goes a long way when making baits (unless you are planning on selling it), so I should stick with the best stuff like beaver and muskrat. After making that decision and actively saving beaver and muskrat meat, I have found I have more than enough to make myself and some friends bait whenever I feel up to it.
